I've been bicycling in the heat here in Virginia.  My sil says I'm crazy.  She likes to stay in the house in the air conditioning during these 100+ degree days.  She doesn't know what she is missing.  I texted a picture of the beach back to all the house sitters yesterday.  I brought an extra bike down for my sister in law to ride but she hasn't been on it yet. Another year passed that I rode in the MS-150 and didn't have a helmet cam.  If I had one I would have been able to take a picture of something like this only we were all wearing helmets.

What?  No helmet law?

Most places don't require helmets on adults on bicycles

This weeks adventure is going to include exploring the abandoned turnpike tunnels.  In 1968 they re-routed the Pennsylvania turnpike to avoid some of the tunnels through the mountains.  That section of turnpike and the tunnels were just abandoned, they are still there.  Some bikers discovered hot to get to abandoned section and put the directions online.  I'm driving down to Breezewood this week going exploring.  I hear it is a twilight zone experience to be riding down an abandoned highway, nobody else around, no motor vehicles, probably no other bicycles either.  I wonder if there is a cell phone signal?  Probably not. Undecided
It would be nice to find a riding buddy in case I get eaten by a bear or something.  That way people back home can find out what happened to me.

Take some bear repellent with you - or a shotgun.

I had a blast exploring the abandoned turnpike.  Kinda spooky in the tunnels, not so much the tunnel proper but I got off the bike and went inside where the ventilation turbos are and the different access passages.  They are really dark.  In the tunnels I couldn't help but sing.  It sounds so awesome.  Here's a few pics.

I hope they didn't charge you any toll on the Turnpike's abandoned section.

Great pictures.  I would have been a bit skeered in the tunnels but  bet it was awesome.

When I got home my new bike light I ordered was here.  Day late and dollar short? Grin  It will be nice for commuting.  I tried it out and it's really bright.  Prolly better I didn't have it, inspired me to bring along an extra flashlight and I used it for exploring all the rooms and passages not seen from the main tunnels.  There is a lot going on in a tunnel that is in use for vehicles, lighting and ventilation are quite extensive.  Of course all of that is shut down now.  Don't fart in the tunnel, the turbines are shut down that ventilate the tunnel.
